Some people make wine using an Excel spreadsheet. Rafa Cañizares does it with his memory. La Quinta de Rafa is his most personal project in the Almansa DO, born from vineyards located at an altitude of 850 meters.
What does that mean? It means that the grapes (Garnacha Tintorera and Syrah) suffer terribly from freezing winters and summer nights that force you to sleep with a blanket. This "suffering" translates into a deep cherry color that looks like ink and an intensity that blows your mind.
The winery, Bodegas Volver, has a clear philosophy: to return to tradition but without the stale aroma. It's aged for just six months in French oak barrels, precisely enough so the wood doesn't overpower the fruit, but rather gives it a boost, allowing it to flow smoothly and effortlessly through your mouth.
What will you notice?
An explosion of blackberries, cherries, and that touch of licorice that reminds you of the sweets from your childhood, but in an adult version and with 14.5% alcohol. It's concentrated, well-rounded, and dangerously easy to drink.
